People across generations swear Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. We’ve all wished that someone should hold their hand out for us when we’re running to catch a train. We all believe, in our heart of hearts, that there’s a Raj for every Simran. But what made this film even more memorable was its beautifully put together cast. A stern father and a cool one, a strong mother figure and a know-all sister – these are just some of the characters we cherish from the film. But after close to 20 years and more than 1000 weeks at the theatres, where can we find the cast members of DDLJ now? We tell you...

Kajol From playing the sweet and playful Simran, whose one wish was to see Eurpoe before she was married off to a man of her father’s choosing, Kajol has indeed gone to the moon and back with her flourishing film career. We love her as the courageous Naina Sehgal in Dushman, as the tomboyish Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and even as the out-and-out Delhi girl in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Every time she acts, she leaves us awestruck. Today, she’s not only a doting wife and a mother of two, but she is also making waves on the fashion front and is all set to wow us again with Dilwale, opposite her best on screen partner, Shah Rukh Khan.

Farida Jalal We loved Farida Jalal as the loving mother to Kajol in DDLJ, for which she even won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female). She went on to do more such roles in films like Dil Toh Paagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Her portrayals are full of compassion and even an element of playfulness, making her an endearing mother figure. She even made her foray into television with shows like Shararat, where she played a grandmother with magical powers. Though her last major film was Student of the Year, where she played grandmother to Sidharth Malhotra, she still continues to act on television.

Anupam Kher From being the fun-loving father to Shah Rukh Khan, Anupam Kher has come a long way. An actor, producer, director and even a mentor at his own acting school, An Actor Prepares!, the veteran actor has explored a vast variety of roles in both Indian and international projects like Silver Linings Playbook. He’s not only a commanding presence on screen but also has a number of plays to his credit and has even hosted a number of shows on television. From father figure, to con man and even a psychiatrist, Anupam Kher does it all with ease!

Himani Shivpuri Who can forget this expressive and lovable spinster Bhua from DDLJ? Since 1995, Himani Shivpuri has acted in a host of films and TV shows. Known for her character roles in films like Pardes, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, she has also acted in TV shows like Sasural Simar Ka and series like Gubbare and Dollar Bahu. Currently, she’s reduced on film work and is only concentrating on television.

Parmeet Sethi made his debut with DDLJ when he played the Punjabi munda, Kuljeet. Since then he has branched out to doing a number of things both in films and television. Whether it was doing a crime comedy show with Detective Omkar Nath – DON or even directing his own film, Badmaash Company. Word is that we shall see Parmeet Sethi after a seven-year long hiatus in Zoya Akhtar’s multistarrer film, Dil Dhadhakne Do! We can’t wait for this charming actor to take to the screen again.

Anaita Shroff Adajania Having done this film as Anaita Shroff, she married acclaimed director, Homi Adajania in 2002. Seen in a small appearance as Kajol’s best friend, Sheena, Anaita Shroff Adajania is now one of Bollywood’s top stylists. Her designs feature in leading fashion magazines and her style sensibility is one to watch out for. She was seen again on screen in a friendly appearance as Gita in Kal Ho Na Ho.

Karan Johar Not just the geeky friend to Shah Rukh Khan in the film, Karan Johar was also an Assistant Director to Aditya Chopra for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. And today, he is one of industry’s biggest directors, creating canvasses that are larger than life and absolutely entertaining to watch. He has not only made a name for himself as a director, but also as a producer, a mentor, a stylist, a talk show host and now even an actor! Karan Johar will be seen in a full-fledged negative role in Bombay Velvet directed by Anurag Kashyap.
